The mission of The Glen Retirement System is to enrich the lives of older people through housing, healthcare and services. This mission is accomplished by dedicated community volunteers and compassionate professionals with commitment, vision and leadership.
In 2023, we celebrate 125 years of serving our community. The history of The Glen dates back to 1890 and the vision of Miss Mary Files. She dreamed of providing a permanent home for the homeless older women of Shreveport. She died before her dream was realized, but left a sum of money behind to be used toward fulfilling her mission. In 1898, her two sisters, Miss Dick Files and Mrs. Rhoda Files Hunter, completed what she started by forming the "Home for the Homeless," which served as a haven for women in need. The institution formed a Board of Directors that continues to serve as a governing body in today's organization. This group of leaders constantly evaluates the needs of the community and thus evolve the capabilities of The Glen.
The Glen continues to transform over the years while preserving the mission of the organization and the visions of our predecessors. Today, The Glen is a nonprofit, Life Plan Community. The Glen, located in South Shreveport, is proud to serve the Shreveport-Bossier City community. We have extended our services over the years to offer a multitude of living options to older adults in our community, as well as support services and community outreach programs that benefit those who live beyond our location on East Flournoy Lucas Road.
